I needed to get my transponder re-certified. Since I have a glider, I can't just fly it into the airport and taxi it up to the spot. Instead, I drove it over in a trailer behind my pickup truck. I pulled the glider out of the trailer in the parking lot (that got some weird looks). The avionics technician (Joe) showed up (early! that was great!) and did all that was necessary to get the FAA's biennial transponder check squared away for another 24 months.

I have been coming to Mackinac Island and the surrounding area for more than fifty (50) years. Although I have greatly enjoyed our adventures, there remained a number of mysteries that we had not explored. I was told there was an airport on the island, but had never been there. I heard about the state park but had no idea how much of the island remained forested and/or undeveloped. So, when my wife suggested that we take a flight over the island and the surrounding communities, I was excited to take a look at the area from another vantage point. The reasonable rates made the decision easier and we were excited to go airborne. We met Denny and Stacey Fitch that operate the Delta Fox Company. Mr. Fitch told us about his extensive flying experience. He explained the many safety features of the plane and walked us through the pre-flight checklist. To our surprise, the Mackinac Island airport was quite large for such a small island. The airport building and office were neat and clean and the personnel there were quite friendly. As we took off, it was immediately apparent that Mackinac Island was significantly more complex than we had imagined. There were large homes that we did not know existed. There were large areas of undeveloped land and numerous trails that we had not seen. And the true majesty of the Grand Hotel, its newly renovated grounds and the other significant landmarks throughout the developed areas of the island were so much more visible from the air. We highly recommend that anyone who loves the island or is seeking a better understanding of its history and current status, view the environs from the air. It was certainly an eye opening experience for the two of us.
